DEVELOPMENT DETAILS
Our site on Waterloo Road has faced the threat of Compulsory Purchase by Havering Council as part of their plan to redevelop the estate for housing. This situation left the future of HICC uncertain. Despite ongoing discussions with the council, progress was slow. While Havering Council offered space within the current estate, the location did not suit our needs as their main focus was on housing development. After years of negotiations, a suitable site was identified for HICC at 222-226 South Street, Romford, RM1 2AD. The existing building on the new site is inadequate, and architects John McAslan and Partners have been appointed to design the new Mosque.
Below are the design specifics of the plan crafted by the architects. While some adjustments are needed, the fundamental aspects of the Mosque have been approved. The new Mosque design is notably larger than our current location, and Havering Council has committed to funding a portion of the construction. The exact amount of their contribution is still under negotiation, but based on the information provided, we anticipate a shortfall of £4.5m to complete construction.

THE DETAILS
CAPACITY
The upcoming Mosque will have the capacity to host more than 1000 individuals during a single Jumu’ah, enabling us to meet the growing demand for our services. The existing Mosque lacks the necessary space for the increasing number of weekly visitors and for our fully-booked classes. Moreover, the new facility will provide improved storage and distribution for our essential food bank and soup kitchen services.
CONSTRUCTION
The new Mosque will be built as an eco Mosque, using the latest technology to reduce our carbon footprint and running costs. It will be constructed to Passivhaus standard a world leading energy efficiency and thermal performance standard More info. TIMELINE
We have enlisted all the necessary consultants to commence work on site analysis and design, and plan to initiate the planning application soon. Due to the complexity of the application, we foresee a formal planning consent decision early next year.Upon receiving planning approval, construction will commence, and our initial estimates suggest that building the new Mosque will take approximately 18 months.
